Oral Surgery
Any treatment that is more invasive or detailed than standard oral treatment, completed on the gums, jaw or teeth is known as oral surgery. It is usually required when simpler approaches won't be successful. For example; a wisdom tooth extraction might require a surgical approach because the tooth is impacted, or there is complex injury well beneath the gum line. In some instances, the very basis of a treatment requires surgery. Dental implants for example, require minor oral surgery to place them and ready to heal within the jawbone.
Common examples of oral surgery include:
- Periodontal surgery (for advanced gum disease treatment)
- Dental implant placement
- Wisdom teeth removal
- Diseased or impacted tooth extraction
- Facial injury relating to the jaw, teeth, gums or soft tissues around the mouth
- Dental abscess treatment
- TMJ (temporomandibular joint) treatment
- Unequal jaw growth treatment
- Reconstructive surgery related to the mouth
There are also surgical procedures and plans specific to the circumstance or condition of a patient, applied using the expertise and experience of the specialist team leading treatment.

Oral Surgery Referral
Usually, any oral surgery treatment you need will follow a detailed consultation and sometimes will be recommended after other less-invasive treatments are tried. In some instances you may be referred to us by your doctor or by the hospital.
Oral Surgery Aftercare
Recovery following oral surgery is extremely important, which is why we always provide plenty of advice and guidance following treatment. Your surgeon or dentist will want to ensure any risk of infection or slowed healing is avoided. We recommend that you always follow any aftercare instructions you are given for optimum oral surgery recovery.
